TDN World Desk: Again, in a shocking incident, a 68-year-old Muslim man identified as Shaukat Ali, has been target of mob lynching. He was thrashed mercilessly and forced to eat pork.
The incident took place in Assam’s Biswanath Chariali. On Sunday, 7 April a furious Mob suspected Saukat Ali of selling beef and thrashed him in a weekly market, known as haat.
Two videos regarding this violent incident surfaced on social media. In one vide, the elderly man was seen surrounded by a group of extremist people who are using abusive language. Some of them can be heard asking Ali “Are you Bangladeshi?”. They asked if he had NRC certificate, if he had a license to sell.
In another video, the Muslim man was seen kneeling in puddle water surrounded by the mob, who forced him, what they say, to eat pork.
According to Time8, an Assamese news outlet, the Muslim man, Shaukat Ali, was stopped from offering prayer and forced to eat pork.
“I was badly beaten by the mob for keeping beef in my hotel for sale. I was even stopped from offering namaz and forced to eat pork. I am doing this business for the last 40 years,” Ali was quoted by Time8 as saying. Ali received injuries and his medical treatment is undergoing in Biswanath Civil Hospital.
Muhammad Shahabuddin, brother of victim Shaukat Ali has filed a First Information Report (FIR) in the local police station in Biswanath. However, so far, no one is arrested. According to Hindu, including two market committee ledaers, the police picked up five people in connection with the mob violence. Though police released them after taking their signs in a paper of good behaviour bond under section 107. Biswanath district chief, Rakesh Roushan, also trifled the seriousness of the matter. He denied to accept this brutal incident as a communal in nature.
On Tuesday, AIMIM supremo Asaduddin Owaisi took to twitter. He wrote, ” I know many people who feel they’re desensitized because of the number of lynchings in the last 5 years.”
“I am not, each video infuriates me and saddens me. It’s irrelevant that beef is legal in Assam, lynching an innocent old man is illegal in every part of India “, added he.
CPI(M) polit bureau member and MP Md Salim also tweeted condemning the attack on Muslim man. He wrote from his twitter handle, “Firstly, beef is legal for consumption with ‘fit-for-slaughter’ certificate in Assam, it’s not illegal. In places like Kokrajhar 10 different non-Muslim communities eat Beef. These goons don’t care about cows, they just need an excuse to unleash their hatred for the muslims.”
In a second twitter thread he wrote, ” A 68 yr old man was beaten by goons who forced him to eat Pork in public while abusing his religious faith just because they “suspected” him of selling “beef”. We should hang our heads in shame.”
On Tuesday, demanding an independent high level inquiry All Assam Minorities Students has written letter to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The student body also allegedly, ” the police action and reaction in this incident seemed one-sided and it concerns us about the neutrality and commitment”.
