TDN world desk: On Wednesday morning union Cabinet clears Citizenship Amendment Bill and the bill is likely to be tabled next week in the Lok Sabha for the final approval.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is drafted with an intent to accredit citizenship to the non-muslims who came from the neighbouring countries – Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan. The muslims are to be excluded from this bill.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told BJP parliamentary on Tuesday that CAB is as important as the abrogation of article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
Congress leader Sashi Tharoor opposed the bill citing its discriminatory nature based on religion.
The Thiruvananthampuram MP said, “I am opposed to the Bill. It is fundamentally against the tenets of democracy. I speak for myself. We cannot discriminate on the basis of religion.”
Meanwhile, Amit Shah on Saturday held conversatio with northeastern states’ representatives and leaders. During the meeting leaders in the region appealed to Union Home Minister to exclude their states from CAB.
