TDN World: The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on Thursday slammed the Narendra Modi government for targeting the anti-CAA protesters during the pandemic Covid-19 lockdown. THe US bipartisan panel also voiced concern over the arrest of Safoora Zargar who is pregnant and incarcerated in tihar Jail.

“During COVID19 crisis, there are reports #India govt is arresting Muslim activists protesting the #CAA, including Safoora Zargar who is pregnant,” The USCIRF said.

“At this time, India should be releasing prisoners of conscience, not targeting those practicing their democratic right to protest,” added the US watchdog.

India has arrested a number of anti-CAA activists, mostly Muslims, during the ongiong Covid-19 lockdown when the judicial system is not fully fuctional to avail them a fair-trial.

Just two weeks ago, the USCIRF recommended the US government to balcklist India for violating religious freedom granted to its minority Muslims.
