TDN World Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced extension of the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Ann Yojana till November. Narendra Modi said,”Rs 90,000 crore to be spent more on providing free ration to poor for five more months under the PM Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana. Including last three months expenditure, this expenditure goes up to Rs 1.5 lakh crore,”
PM also said,“Our government has decided to extend the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Yojana till Diwali and Chhat Puja, that is till November. This means the scheme that gives free ration to 80 crore people will continue till November. Government will give every member of the family 5 kg wheat or 5 kg rice apart from one kg of grams. The expansion of this scheme will cost Rs 90,000 crore (to the exchequer). If we add expenses incurred in the last three months, it is Rs 1.5 lakh crore,”
After Modi’s announcement on free ration scheme, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee
announced on Tuesday that the state government would distribute free food grains to the poor till June 2021.CM announcement came within an hour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation in which he announced the extension of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, the scheme to provide free ration to the poor during the COVID-19 pandemic, till the end of November.
Mamata Banerjee said, “For the first three months of the lockdown we gave each family five kilos of rice. Over the next three months, till September, we would provide five kilos of rice along with an equal amount of flour to each family. We will provide free ration till June 2021.”
She also said, “We give better quality rice than the Centre. Only 6.01 crore people or around 60% of the people in Bengal have been benefited from the Centre free ration scheme. We are providing to 10 crore people.”
