TDN World, Kolkata: Women started sit-in protest against NRC at Park Circus Maidan. The dharna began on Tuesday. Mainly, women who hail from Kolkata, joined the protest. However, besides participating the sit in protest women also returning home for cooking foods. Having finished their house-hold duties they are returning to the protest ground to express solidarity against NPR-NRC-CAA. Many of the women who took in the protest said that on 22 January Supreme Court is to hold a hearing over it. We expect from the apex court that it would abrogate this discriminatory law. If not revoked, our protest will continue. The government will be forced to stay away from taing unconstitutional steps.

Uzma Alam, member of Muslim Personal Law Board said,” After several discussion we have decided to stage sit-in protest. The women of this city expressed eagerness to take part in a day-night dharna following the example of the women of Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh. This protest will continue for indefinite time.

Many women came to join the protest with babies on their lap. A number of elderly women also sat in dharna.

One woman said, “In no way we are going to detention camps, even though they kill us. We will not accept any conspiracy to render us stateless. We will protest, stick to street movements, but not accept the policy to snatch away our citizenship.”

A lot of women said from the dharana that they would boycott the NPR, NRC. At times, from little to older, people were raising slogans of “Piyari piyari Azadi”.
