TDN World Desk: On Friday, addressing a public event noble laureate Amartya Sen said, nowadays ” Jai Shri Ram slogan is used ” to beat up people ” across the country.

During a public event in Kolkata’ prestigious Jadavpur University the noble laureate economist and philosopher said, ” I have not heard Jai Shri Ram, before (in this way). It is now used to beat up people. I think it has no association with Bengali culture”.

Taking indirect jibe at the right groups, he also criticized the celebration of Ram Navami.

” I had never heard of Ram Navami before. I asked my four-year-old grandchild who is your favourite deity? She replied, ‘Maa Durga’. The significance of Maa Durga cannot be compared with Ram Navami,” Sen said.

In his speech Sen also took note of the atrocities committed against the minority Muslims in the country.

He said, ” If people of a certain religion are scared to move freely or are fear-bound, it is a serious matter”.

Besides pursuing intellectual works, Amartya Sen also speaks over political and social issues. He is known as a vocal critic of Narendra Modi government.
