TDN World, Kolkata: Shaheen Bagh shows the way, now women in Kolkata to sit for day-night protest to oppose the contentious CAA, NPR and NRC.

Uzma Alam, a member of women wing of Muslim Personal Law Board, on Sunday said, ” With an aim to stage protest several discussion has been held with the people of Kolkata. Here the women are willing to sit for day-night protest following the example of Shaheen Bagh.”

On Sunday, a decision has been taken. There will be consecutive protests from January 18 onwards. We will sit in dharna at Jorasanko. Mahajati Sadan area will also used for the purpose,” she added.

Asked about the necessity of the protest, Uzma said,” Women in Kolkata said that this time we have to walk out of home. If the Women in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh can take to streets why not the women in Kolkata? “

“We saw the horrendous exercise of NRC in Assam. People are dying in detention camps. NRC is carried out with a sole purpose to intimidate people and cash in votes. And trying to enslave a great number of people by snatching away government benifits and their voting rights. If we don’t take to streets now, then when?,” said another woman.

Kolkata witnessed numerous rallies meetings joined and led by women on different issues.Women walked on streets in huge number opposing the NRC. But, perhaps, never saw hunger-strike and dharna before. This is, probably, first time in Kolkata that women are going to organise a sit-in protest for indefinite time. Alongside women from the Muslim community, the non-Muslim women will also take part in this dharna.
