TDN World Desk: Nobel-laureate economist Amartya Sen who is known for being critical of BJP-led Narendra Modi government’s economic policy, has won 2020 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.

The prestigious award conferred upon him by Börsenverein, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association for his notable contribution in the field of global justice, social inequality in education and healthcare.

“The German Publishers and Booksellers Association hereby awards the 2020 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade to the economist and philosopher Amartya Sen. Among Sen’s most important contributions is the idea of evaluating a society’s wealth not solely based on economic growth indices, but also on the opportunities for development available to all individuals who comprise that society, in particular its weakest members. His vivid and powerful descriptions have also served to elucidate the fundamental ways in which poverty, hunger and illness are intimately linked to the absence of free and democratic structures,” said the statement from Börsenverein, German Publishers and Booksellers Association.

The announcement of Sen recieving prestigious 2020 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade was made on wednesday by Karin Schmidt-Friderichs, who as head of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Börsenverein).

Sen is known for his critical view on the economic policy of Narendra Modi government. Earlier he strongly opposed the demonetisation.

Sen also authored a book titled ‘Quantum Leap in the Wrong Direction? where he termed the introduction of demonetisation and GST as “two Modi-made disasters”.
