TDN World Desk: With a massive mandate Gotabay Rajapaksa wins in the presidential election. Official results showed that Mr Rajapaksa bags 52.25 % of the vote.
Mr Rajapaksa likely to sworn in on Monday.
After Rajapaksa’s victory various countries congratulated him. Indian Prime Minister also took to Twitter to congratulate him. PM Modi tweeted, Congratulations @GotabayaR on your victory in the Presidential elections.
I look forward to working closely with you for deepening the close and fraternal ties between our two countries and citizens, and for peace, prosperity as well as security in our region.
However, Muslims in the country fears that they might be further marginalized.
Just one day ahead of election, Hilmy Ahmed, the vice-president of the Sri Lanka Muslim Council, told The Guardian news paper, ” This election campaign has the whole Muslim community of Sri Lanka very sacred.”
” Almost all the nationalist extremists have banded together behind Gotabya Rajapaksa and should he win, we fear they will come out in full force with their racist, anti-Muslim agenda and attacks.”
It is to be noted that as Pulwama attack helped the Modi got win 2019 general election, quite in a similar manner Rajapaksa’s Sinhalese-Buddhist nationalist party also got benefit of the April Easter Sunday attack in the churches by the radical terrorists that killed 269 people. This Easter incident helped polarization between the followers of Buddhism and Islamic religion.
