TDN World Desk: Amid COVID lockdown Delhi Police intensifies its effort to crush the backboon of anti-CAA-NRC protests. After Jamia students Safoora Zargar and Meeran Haider, on Monday, a special cell of Delhi police arrested the president of Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association,Shifa-Ur-Rahman, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act over his alleged involvement in the North East Delhi violence.

“We had technical evidence against him which suggests that he incited mobs during the riots,” an unidentified police officer told the PTI News Agency. “He was also seen in the CCTV footage which was collected from the riot-affected areas. We have checked his call record details and WhatsApp messages and found more evidence which suggests his involvement in the riots.”

Earlier police invoked anti-terror UAPA law against student activist Umar Khalid, who had also been a prominent face of anti-CAA-NRC movement.

Reacting over the arrest of Shifa-Ur-Rahman, Jamia student leader Ayesha Renna said, “Their intention is to suppress the #AntiCAA protests. We should not allow this to continue.”

In February Delhi riot more than 52 people were killed injuring hundreds others, and making thousand homeless. Most of the victims of this violence had been the Muslims community living in the area.Allegation of police inaction were made. Despite Delhi High Court’s order Delhi Police had failed to arrest heavy-weigh BJP leaders who were accused of fomenting the violence with incendiary speech.

Now, amid lockdown, when the entire country is busy in combating COVID-19, the Delhi Police arrests Muslim anti-CAA-NRC-NPR leders under the draconian UAPA law.

Protesting the arrest of Shifa-Ur-Rahman and other studenta AISA Jamia Millia Islamia demanded the charges against them to be dropped.

Protesting the arbitrary arrest, close to 12,000 social media users raised voice urging the Modi government to stop targeting JMI.
