TDN World Desk: Two Human rights activists Anand Teltumbde, Gautam Navlakha, who were arrested in connection with the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence case, have been awarded as the joint recipient of 2020 Shakti Bhatt Book Prize.
While both the authors in jail, Rama Teltumbde, wife of teltumbde will recieve the prize on behalf her husband.
This year the prize has been revamped omitting the word ‘first’, before it was called he Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize.
Teltumbde has authored more than two dozen book, including ‘Republic of Caste and Radical in Ambedkar and Dalits: Past, Present and Future’, ‘The Republic of Caste’ and ‘The Radical in Ambedkar’.Anand Teltumbde is married to Rama Teltumbde, the granddaughter of B.R. Ambedkar.
Gautam Navlakha is an activist, journalist and author. He is the writer of ‘Days and Nights in the Heartland of Rebellion’.
Since 2008 the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize has recognised and celebrated literature from the South Asian subcontinent, honouring writers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and every corner of India.
Commenting over the reason to conferring them the prize, author Jeet Thayil who is a co-curator of the award told the Indian Express “This year we chose them for many reason and it is very clear what these reasons are. They are good men who have been in jail for the wrong reasons”.
