TDN World Desk: Former JNU student leader and United Against Hate activist Umar Khalid has been arrested by the Delhi Police, under the stringent UAPA law, in connection with North-East Delhi violence that broke out in February, killing 53 lives, mostly Muslims.

Dr. SQR Ilyas, National President of Welfare Party of India and father of Umar Khalid said that his son has been “implicated” in the riots case.

Dr. Ilyas also urged people to stand with Umar Khalid.

Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan termed Khalid and other activists arrest as “conspiracy by the police”.

Putting out a Tweet on Monday Bhushan wrote on Monday, ” Umar Khalid’s arrest by Delhi police after naming Yechury, Yogendra Yadav, Jayati Ghosh& Apoorvanand, leaves no doubt at all about the malafide nature of it’s investigation into Delhi riots. It’s a conspiracy by the police to frame peaceful activists in the guise of Investigation”.

Extending solidarity Twitterati expressed huge outcry over the arrest of former JNU scholar and student activist.

As of 8:42 am, Monday, 60.9K people took to Twitter to express solidarity with Umar Khalid.
