TDN World Desk: Northeast states opposed the introduction of Citizenship Amendment Bill again and again. On Monday, Assam witnessed a major shut down as 16 organizations called for a 12-hour bandh in the state. Blocking roads and burning tyres people demonstrated against the bill in several cities in the state. As per reports, armed forces have been deployed in places to tackle agitation.
Today’s bandh was supported by 16 left-affiliate organizations that include SFI, DYFI, AIDWA, AISF, AISA, IPTA and several tribal students organizations of Assam.
Last week, leaders and public representatives from the northen states including Assam, Mijoram, and Arunachal Pradesh firemly opposed the bill during their visit with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
North-east states that include Assam cited their indigenous identity would be at peril if the bill is implemented in the region.
On Monday, Lok Sabha introduced Citizenship Amendment Bill with 293 votes in favour of it and 82 against.
