TDN World: Welfare Party of India (WPI) has demanded immediate and unconditional release of Sharjeel Usmani, one of the key leaders to mobilise the anti-CAA-NRC protests, while condemning his arrest.

Responding over Usmani’s incarceration Dr SQR Illyas, the National President of WPI, said, “Arrest of Mr Sharjeel Usmani is yet another blot on the secular fabric of the country.”

Sharjeel Usmani, a former student of AMU and the National secretary of Fraternity Movement, was picked up from his residence by plain-clothed policemen. He was sent to 14-days judicial custody on Thursday.

Taking jibe at the the Centre, Dr Illyas said,”The government is on witch hunt to curb dissent and free speech, and is arresting and harassing innocent people, student activists who took part in anti-CAA protest.”

The WPI president reminded the government that these innocent people, student activists who were protesting against CAA law were exercising their democratic rights as enshrined in the constitution.

Sharjeel Usmani is not the lone anti-CAA protesters and leader who was arrested during the covid-19 lock down period. Earlier, Safoora Zargar, Meeran Haider, Asif Iqbal, United Against Hate’s leader Khalid Saifi and Dr Kafeel Khan and many others were put behind bar for their leading role against the discriminatory anti-CAA law.

WPI has appealed to the government to release “all innocent activists including Sharjeel Usmani immediately and unconditionally” and compensate them.
