TDN World Desk: Prominent writer Arundhati Roy expressed grave concern over the Citizenship Act. She said, We are faced with the biggest challenge since independence”.
The Man Broker Prize winner author Roy issuing a statement said the law “will break the back of our Constitution and cut the ground from under our feet.”
The author drew a coparision between the demonetisation and the newly amended Citizenship Act. She opined that like the demonetisation that incurrred huge monitary crisis, this law would also break the back of our contitution.
“Three years ago, we stood in line obidiently outside banks as demonetization was imposed on us, a policy that broke the back of our country’s economy. Now the National Register of Citizens coupled with the Citizenship Amendment Bill is set to break the back of our constitution and cut the ground from under our feet”, the author said.
Taking reference to Germany’s Nazi regime, Arundhati the author of The God of Small Things, said “Are we going to stand in line once again, obediently, and comply with the policy that eerily resembles the 1935 Nuremberg Laws of the Third Reich,” Roy asked. She said India will cease to exist if we accept this, adding that “we are faced with the biggest challenge since Independence.”
Roy is a vocal critic of Narendra Modi government.
