TDN World Desk: The raging spike of coronavirus has become a global threat. Over 10,40,746 people in India have contacted the virus and more than 26,000 people died of it. But, what will make one wonder is the news of Lakhadeep – an archipelago of 36 islands- where not a snigle coronavirus case has been reported yet.
And what is more harrowing for the hate-mongers, fake news peddlers, who blamed the Muslims for the spread of coronavirus and donned the virus with Muslim attire, is the fact that this territory is mostly inhabited by the Muslims – 97% of the total population are Muslims. The total population stands to be 70,000. The only Membre of Parliament from this territory also happens to be a Muslim, namely Mohammed Faizal.
Various national media has reported over it including The Hindu, Print, New Indian Express.
Responding to questions related to Covid-19 cases Covid India Seva, the official Twitter handle of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, also informed on Thursaday that no cases reported yet from Lakshadeep.
But how has this region resisted to safeguard it from the Killer desease?
Since the lockdown came into effect on March 23, no one had been allowed to reach the islands without a seven-day quarantine followed by a COVID-19 test, all at the expense of the island administration, said Mohamed Faizal, as reported by the Hindu.
No one had been allowed to reach the islands without a seven-day quarantine followed by a COVID-19 test, all at the expense of the island administration, added Faizal, the Lakshadweep MP.
The only airport at Agatti was closed early in March.
Kerala being the closest neighbour, the territory has to rely on it for essential supplies, education and health services. But while Kerala has reported over 11,000 cases, it still remained corona-free.
COVID-19 nodal officer Salih Komalam, however, sees no mirracle in it.Komalam and his team have worked relentlessly and kept vigil with patience and meticulous attention to details.
