TDN World Desk: Dr. Payal Tadvi’s death has shaken the country. On May 22 she was driven to commit suicide because of her scheduled Tribe background.

Student Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) condemned Dr Payal Tadvi’s ‘murder’ and urged rigorous action against the culprits.

Labeled Shafi, President SIO of India expressed his condolence and assured to render all the support in the struggle for the justice of Dr. Payal Tadvi.

Dr. Payal Tadvi, a 27-year old resident doctor at the BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai, hailed from the Bhil Muslim community. Her family has claimed that she was insulted, questioned about her medical skills, threatened and ridiculed on a daily basis for being an Adivasi and availing Scheduled Tribe reservation.

On 22nd May 2019, she was driven to commit suicide after months of harassment and during which she made repeated complaints to little avail. While there has been an FIR that has been filed against the three seniors, Hema Ahuja, Ankita Khandelwal, and Bhakti Mhare, they have still not been arrested.

Terming it a case of ‘institutional murder’, Labeed Shafi said that it was part of a troubling pattern of humiliation and exclusion regularly faced by students coming from underprivileged backgrounds in campuses around the country. A mere internal inquiry and disciplinary action would not be enough in this case. It is imperative that those responsible must be arrested and tried for creating conditions that led Dr. Payal to commit suicide, and their medical registration should also be canceled. An independent inquiry is also needed to understand how the hospital failed to check this egregious violence taking place within the institution, and appropriate action must be taken to ensure that the kind of treatment Dr. Payal endured must be faced by no one else.

Calling Dr. Payal Tadvi’s untimely death a tragic loss for the whole nation, Labeed Shafi said that it was high time for the government and the society at large to take concrete steps to root out the systemic institutional discrimination prevalent all over the country.

Labeed Shafi also extended his support to the candle light march being organised in support of Dr Payal on 28th May from 5 pm at Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi.

Besides SIO, several other organisations has expressed concern over Dr Payal Tadvi’s suicide. Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi on Monday staged a protest outside BYL Nair Hospital. Bhim Army Chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad also sought for immediate action. And if the hospital authority fails to take action he threatened to lock the hospital.
