TDN World Desk: They were ardent Hindutva activists and even joined hands in persons with pickaxe and spades during the demolition of Babri mosque on December 6, 1992.But this incident brought a drastic change in the lives of Balbir Singh and Yogendra Pal. To atone their deeds, both friends Balbir and Yogendra converted to Islam. And vowed to build and renovate mosques. Balbir Singh alias Mohammed Aamir now preaches Islam. He sports long beards and wears skull cap. Born in a village near Panipat in the state of Hariyana. His father, Daulat Ram, who was a school teacher, however believed in secularism and followed Gandhian ideology. But unlike his father, Balbir Singh took the opposite pole. Inspired by Bala Saheb Thackeray he joined Shiv Sena. He also drew inspiration from RSS and regularly attended in the programs of a nearby sakha.
Aamir said that he took determination in building Ram temple at the site of Babri mosque. But, such is teh irony of time that both Aamir and his friend Mohammed Umar, formerly Yogendra Pal are now engaged in a mission to renovating and building mosques. To purge their sins they had pledged to renovate 100 mosques.
Married to a Muslim woman Aamir runs a school and imparts teachings of Islam. Aamir converted to Islam after listening to a sermon of Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui in Deoband.
Speaking to India Today Balbir aka Aamir recounted his ghastly experience at the of Babri mosque demolition. He claimed that he was the first man to climb the middle of the dome of Babri mosque. There were thousands of other kar sevaks who joined hands in demolition of the mosque.
” We feared that the army might have been deployed in large number. But on ground there was hardly any security, that gave us a boost and we were mentally prepared to demolish the masjid that day,” India Today qoutes Mohammad Aamir.
After demolishing the mosque when Aamir reached village, he was given a warm welcome by the people. The bricks they had brought from the sabotage were kept in local Shiv Sena office.However, Aamir’s family did not support his actions.
” But at home, my family’s reaction shocked me. My secular family denounced my actions. I had participated in Kar Seva because I felt strongly about it, but I realized later that I was wrong.”
Once an active Shiv Sena activist Balbir Singh, said, ” I realized that I had taken law in my hands nad violated the constitution of India. Guilty, I embrace Islam.
Balbir claimed that since 1993 to 2013, within this 24 years he had renovated many mosques. He also discovered few collapsed mosques in Mewat and renovated them with the help local Muslims.
