TDN World Desk: Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram is to be intterogated in Tihar jail on November 22 and 23 in the INX Media money laundering case. In a recent development,A Delhi court allowed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday to interrogate him.
Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar passed the order on a plea filed by the agency. Reportedly, ED has sought permission from Delhi cour to quizz P Chidambaram from 10 am to 1 pm and 2:30 pm to 4 pm on both days. The court has also extended the veteran Congress leader’s judicial cutody till November 23.
After Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi’s tenure was over Chidambaram made a bail-plea to the high court that has also been nullified as the court deems prima facie allegations against him were serious and he played an “active and key role” in the offence.
The CBI registered its case on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs. 305 crore in 2007, during Mr Chidambaram’s tenure as finance minister.
Thereafter, the ED lodged a money-laundering case in this regard in 2017.
However, P Chidambaram alleged that the BJP govement has targeted him as a political vendetta, a accusation that the saffron party denied.
He was arrested by the ED in the money laundering case on October 16 and is in judicial custody till November 27 under the order of a trial court.
